Do I use A or AN? – When to use which one.
Do I use A or AN? How can I remember which one to use?
This can indeed be very annoying, even for a native English speaker but there is a simple rule, that will help you remember when to use A or AN in front of English words, in an English sentence.
Both A and AN are articles.
Use A before words that begin with a consonant sound.
Use AN before words that begin with a vowel sound.
There are two exceptions: H and U, that I will mention later.
A Consonant Sound | AN Vowel Sound |
A sentence | An egg |
A fish | An elephant |
A cat | An omelette |
A word | An orange |
A dog | An eagle |
A bear | An envelope |
A drink | An ocean |
A glass | An apple |
A car | An igloo |
A book | An appointment |
A fridge | An ice cream |
A telephone | An ant |
With H and U, the trick here is all in the sound.
Listen for a Consonant sound or a Vowel sound.
A Consonant Sound | AN Vowel Sound |
A house | An hour |
A hotel | An honour |
A human | An honest person |
A highchair |
